The irritable, “can’t be pleased” remedy – for teething, colic and oversensitivity to pain.

Overview

Chamomilla is one of the most important remedies for babies and children who are in pain and utterly miserable – nothing seems to satisfy them. It is used for severe teething, colic, fevers and earaches when the child is angry, hypersensitive and only calms briefly when carried. Stool changes, one red cheek, and constant crying are common themes.

When to Think of This Remedy

  • Severe, unbearable pain – especially in babies and children
  • Teething with inflamed, tender gums and constant crying
  • Colic with drawing up of legs and bloated tummy
  • Green, offensive diarrhoea (like chopped spinach)
  • Ear pain, especially at night, with anger and restlessness
  • Fever in teething children with one cheek red and one pale
  • Extreme irritability during dental work or procedures

Mental & Emotional Picture

  • Extremely irritable, restless and impatient
  • Demands things then throws them away or rejects them
  • Wants to be carried constantly – slightly better when carried
  • Cries, screams or can’t be consoled
  • Oversensitive to pain – reacts strongly to even mild discomfort

Physical Indicators

  • Teething with red, swollen, tender gums
  • One cheek red, the other pale
  • Green, slimy or “chopped spinach” stools
  • Colicky abdominal pain with bloating, legs drawn up
  • Ear pain, worse at night or when lying down
  • Fever in children, especially during teething

Modalities

Better: Being carried, rocked or held; warm applications (for colic)
Worse: At night (often 9pm–midnight), teething, anger, touch, pain, lying down

  • Teething babies who are inconsolable
  • Colic in infants and young children
  • Fussy, overtired, over-stimulated little ones
  • Earaches and fevers with extreme irritability
